Litter only – a book about dustbins is a global typology of the public dustbin.

The Paris designer Philippe Starck once claimed in a radio interview that when he comes to a new place he has not been before, the first thing he does is go for a walk near his hotel, pick a full dustbin, carry it into his room, empty it on the bed and go through its contents in order to learn about the people, their place and the culture. For Starck’s Berlin colleague, Alexandra Martini, 29, the form of the container is enough. Martini photographed public dustbins in 30 countries and all continents in order to capture all those “little differences” . . . One thing is sure: once you have seen this book you will never again throw waste into a bin without thinking about it.
